How can instructors control email notifications?

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Many tools in Sakai (including the Syllabus, Forums and Assignments) can generate emails when new information is posted either by the students or instructors.

1. Be alerted when there are new submissions.

An instructor can choose to be notified by email when a student submits to the Assignment tool in the Assignment Settings.

An administrator can allow participants to send an email notifications when they add new materials to Drop Box. Go to Drop Box > Options.

Site administrators and participants can set up email notifications in Forums and Wiki by clicking the Watch link at the top of either tool.

Students and instructors can subscribe to the Blog and Podcaster through RSS feeds.

2. Notify participants of new activity in Sakai.

The instructor or site administrator has the choice to send an email to the site participants when they make changes or posts in individual tools. You are able to send email notifications from Announcements, Resources, Drop Box, Syllabus, Tests & Quizzes, and Email Archive.

Low priority emails go out to all students or participants who haven’t chosen to limit their email notifications. High priority emails (such as a change in meeting locations, new tests) will go out to all site students/participants regardless of their notification settings.

How can I stop getting so many emails?

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Instructors and site admins have the choice to send an email notification when new information is posted to tools like Syllabus, Forum, or Announcements. You have two options to reduce the amount of emails you receive.

1. Instructors and students can limit or stop getting low priority emails. In Home tab, click Preferences and then Notifications. You will be able to change how you receive emails for Announcements, Resources, Drop Box, Syllabus, and Email Archive.

2. If you are receiving emails for each Forum post, go to the Forums tool, click Watch at the top of the tool, and change your notification settings.

  • Instructors and/or site administrators: take note that your students and/or site participants can adjust the above settings and may not receive all emails/notifications you send out.
  • Students and/or site participants: remember that even if you choose to not receive any emails or notifications, your instructor or Sakai project site administrator might override this setting for specific notifications that they mark as high priority.
